Call for Submissions to “Unfurled: Artist Stories”
Upcoming Exhibition at Propeller Art Gallery & Online
FEBRUARY 10 — MARCH 7, 2021
Deadline for online submission: January 28th, 2021
We invite all Alumni to join Propeller Members in our 2021 members’ exhibition. This will be our 25th year of supporting artists, so let’s start celebrating together.
Propeller Art Gallery Current Members and Alumni are invited to unfurl their creativity and tell an artist’s tale on a long vertical strip of “fabric”. Our vision is to assemble a collection of vibrant banners and other fabricated stories to brighten and invigorate long winter days.
These banners or “fabric” assemblages can be painted, dyed and marked with traditional or unusual processes, printed, ripped, woven into, written upon, cut, or even deconstructed and reshaped into sculptural pieces. The banners may also include collages, sewn in pieces of fabric or embroidery, photo transfers, small found objects, wire; you can also use layering, stitching, braiding, twisting and quilting. The possibilities are endless! The term “fabric” is used in the broadest sense; you can start with a strip of canvas, or any other cloth, found, created, recycled, or with various papers, Tyvek, Mylar and Duralar.
You may have a story in mind or let the process evolve into a narrative. Please include the story related to your fabrication as part of your artist statement in the submission. The text will add to the viewer’s understanding of your creative artwork and will be an integral part of this exhibition.
As this is now a virtual exhibition, there are no limits on the size of the artworks to be submitted. The Unfurled artworks should be unframed. Although we prefer vertical banners, we will accept horizontal displays, sculptures and installations. However, the artists should be guided by the spirit of the call.
This is a non-juried show that welcomes all Propeller Art Gallery Alumni and Current Members.
Due to public health regulations, Unfurled Artist Stories will be presented as a virtual exhibition, featured for an exceptional 4-week duration and remaining available for viewing and purchasing online until May 1st. There will also be a digital catalogue that you will be able to download as a record and documentation of the exhibition artworks.
Organizers: Pria Muzumdar, Peter Friedrichsen, Susan Ruptash, Michelle Letarte
