But Aren’t We All Wounded Butterflies? is a large drawing that originated in a solitary walk along the shores of Lake Erie as the mass southerly migration of monarch butterflies was just beginning. Many of these beautiful creatures beached themselves and died in the sand, in the liminal and ever-changing space between land and water. Still living and already dead, they opened my heart to the tenderness with which we all could hold each other’s vulnerabilities.
