This piece started out as an angry reaction to Alice Monroe’s disappointing and heartbreaking response to her daughter, Andrea Skinner sharing her abuse by her stepfather. I started by cutting up Alice’s book «Dear Life » into strips. Working with paper again grounded me and my angst dissipated. I started to think about the things that soothe me and the images started to form. Books, trees, plants, rocks and water have always given me refuge. I used paint palette papers, hand-pulled prints, book pages and acrylic paint on a cradled board.
A play and response rhythm works best for me, tacking up pieces of paper everywhere and a lot of sitting, watching and moving bits around. In my work I strive to create a balance between the beauty and fragility of the ordinary by deconstructing and abstracting the subject in an ever seeking process.
