In 1996 I was part of a group of OCAD students who were looking for exhibition opportunities in a city where the majority of galleries showed mid-career and established artists. We came together and created our own exhibition opportunity and called it Propeller. It was remarkable. We had little knowledge of how to mount an exhibition, never mind run a gallery. We created a shared knowledge base, worked incredibly hard, supported each other and maintained boundless enthusiasm.
I had my first two-person show in 1997 with Mari Laughlen. My understanding of the practical side of being a professional artist and the peer group I was fortunate enough to be part of were instrumental in fostering the early progress of my practice. I realized that I was capable of anything. We all were.
