It was only in the last year of her life that I had a chance to talk to Gwen about painting and her approach to her work, but I very much enjoyed these conversations. Gwen’ s abstraction came out of simplifying representation to such an extent that the resulting shapes could be fruit, for example, but they were free to be many things. I am not capable of this distillation (I tend to pile on instead) but I admired this ability of hers.
