Tristan Velasquez Coloma is a Filipino-born artist based in Toronto whose work explores the human psyche through his experiences and memories. He is interested in painting portraits, especially self-portraits, that explore the irrationality and vulnerability of the human psyche in hopes to introduce issues and voices to create a conversation about the stigma attached to being a male figure dealing with mental health problems.
Coloma graduated in June of 2020 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from OCAD University.
My work explores the human psyche, specifically the psychology of self. Fuelled by memories and traumas, my paintings use humorous and emotionally charged imagery to display a range of psychological and emotional states through fragmentation, colour, expression, body language, and through play with perspective. As a starting point, I dive into my memory bank and/or observe my current reality and collect certain points from them that I think are essential to this journey of self-exploration. I transform these memories into painted self-portraits in which the artist is the subject and also the question. The changing conceptions of self and the complex relationship between my current reality and my past are important components of who I am.
