Tessa’s artistic approach is guided by Anishinaabe teachings, by ethnobotany and by our shared relationships to the water, to the land, and to the sky. Her artwork often features narratives that highlight the importance of maintaining these relationships and nurturing our shared connections to the natural world. This spirit drives her artistic practice and her intentions are to translate these sentiments into artwork that creates a bridge of empathy, understanding and compassion. Her artistic practices explore processes and mediums, with recent focus on public art installation, digital vector illustration and 3D rendering. She delves into the perceptions of Indigenous culture and traditions through the lens of a modern urban environment, ruminating on what it means to find balance within the realm of traditional versus contemporary and where she and her artwork fit into the past, the present and the future. Working heavily in digital mediums for the past several years, she has been eager to forge a pathway back to the tangible, pursuing new ways of navigating this balance.
