Sandra Laurin‘s passion is photographing the lifestyles, cultures and traditions of people around the world. Born in Toronto, her love of travel has taken her to 56 countries over several years, documenting the people she meets. She has realized the power of her images to raise awareness of social and cultural issues, especially for females in developing countries.
Most recently her work has been concentrated on the issues surrounding immigration, poverty, and human trafficking. Sandra’s solo exhibit, “Behind the Land of Smiles…Human Trafficking in Thailand” raised awareness of a growing social problem confronting our world today.
As an artist, I make images that hopefully will deepen an understanding of present social issues, that will lead to compassion and then to action for change. All my photographs are candid captures, taken with available light and no direction or posing. The photographs are presented in black and white to emphasize the stories. I choose not to title these works because I want the faces to tell the story, to reveal the emotion to the viewer.
