Laurie Waller Benson

Laurie Waller Benson grew up in Pointe Claire, Québec, where she studied Art, Acting and Design, earning a Double Honours and the University Prize in Drama at Bishop’s University.
In Toronto, she worked as a Performer and Designer, winning “Best Visual Presentation” for the Toronto Irish Players.
Moving to Cannington, she co-founded the Village Gallery and taught Art privately and in the Montessori system. Now a member of several Durham Art Associations she exhibits regularly and has won awards in printmaking, sculpture and landscape. Recently she has also been teaching Acting to young people and making props and costumes for the Cannington Haunted Attraction.
Another teaching enterprise includes Yoga, from her own home studio and next year at her teacher’s Yoga Retreat Suryalila in Spain.
My works come from an emotional reaction reflected by images of birds, animals, plants and mythical beings. Many have political or ecological statements as well as personal stories.

I combine printmaking with other media, especially collage and chine collé, incorporating unusual and handmade papers, fabric, beads, buttons, shells and found objects.
I love texture and line and how they join to create strong designs. I enjoy the challenge of carving linoleum or Plexiglas and the surprise the inking of the surface can bring. Since I work without a press, the hands-on approach makes me feel my energy is being directly received.
