Twenty-Something
July 13 – 31, 2022
Twenty-Something explores the transitional years from childhood to adulthood: the twenties. This exhibition will give a voice to the current challenges that young adults face right here, right now.
In an age where everything is being questioned; gender and sexuality, family dynamics, self-identity, relationship expectations, religion, politics, careers, lifestyle, and even geography; there is an incredible amount of room for interpretation and freedom within this exhibition. The most important thing is that the art reflects each artist’s thoughts and feelings on growing up in this time of great societal change. It can be about the world at large, or about your own experiences, as long as it reflects you and your perspective.
In Gallery Exhibition: July 13 – 31
Online Exhibition: July 13 – September 13
In-Gallery Reception: Thursday, July 28, 6 – 9 pm (See photos from the Opening Reception below)
Curatorial Statement
The theme for Twenty-Something was born from my desire to give young adults a professional platform to discuss what it means to be grown-up kids. With all the freedom we longed for as teenagers and all the responsibility of just trying to survive. I hope that everyone, regardless of age, will be able to resonate with the themes of growth and transition that inspired so many beautiful pieces of artwork.
So on behalf of myself, the other Jurors: Doris Purchase, Frances Patella and Susan Freypons, we would like to thank all of the artists that submitted artwork to the Twenty-Something Open Call. We had over 68 submissions from 48 different artists which were better than I had ever dared hope for. Thank you to everyone who donated to the show; the other Propeller members who assisted me with the planning; and of course, thank you to my amazing support system who reminded me to trust in myself and my vision.
My heart is filled with so much love and gratitude for our community. I hope to see you at our Zoom Online Reception on Saturday, July 23rd from 3 – 5 pm as well as at our In-Gallery closing reception on Thursday, July 28th from 6 – 9 pm.
With Love,
Serena Kobayashi-LeBel
