The Portrait Painted | Jim Bourke

April 15-26, 2009

These series of portrait paintings were conceived not only to work within the pictorial space contained by the individual artworks themselves, but they are also meant to relate to one another when experienced as a sequential series. The sense of gesture within each work extends across the negative space of the gallery wall to the next work, animating the series as a whole. Each work is an identity in and of itself, but when the works are joined in a sequence a new relationship is created. I am exploring the different ways that relationship can be defined.
