Retention – Artist Statement
My work is inspired by the tension between past cruelty and the hope of a new future: past cruelty versus hopeful kindness; past hostility and future hospitality; its paradoxes and its contrasts. When looking at the past, I travel a spiritual journey where past paths merge together to form the future. The abstractions of natural forms and the transparent layers are dependent on my lived memory. While this is a very personal journey the viewer accompanies me by creating a unique individual meaning based on his or her own memory. As an artist, I employ visual language to awaken interest and inspire my audience to hold sacred the spiritual past in order to create the future. Each work is a personal rejuvenation of a collection of viewers.
