June 22 – July 3, 2016
Through the Looking Glass: In Search for Identity” a juried exhibition presented as part of the 2016 Nuit Rose festival in Toronto.
The main theme for Nuit Rose 2016 is NIGHT SHIFT, as such the exhibition at Propeller will explore themes surrounding Alice in Wonderland as a metaphor of shift, transformation and search for identity.
Tim Burton recently described Wonderland as a place where “everything is slightly off, even the good people.” Alice is not just trying to figure out Wonderland, but also attempting to determine who she is, and what constitutes her identity in a world that actively challenges her perspective and sense of self. She rightly understands that her self perception cannot remain fixed in a world that has drastically different rules from her own. Since Wonderland is a by-product of her own imagination, it becomes clear that it is Alice’s identity and not Wonderland itself, that is being called into question. Her quest to understand Wonderland becomes a quest to understand the forces and feelings that comprise her identity.
We are looking for innovative, witty and vibrant works that will hurl you into another world inspired by the adventures of Alice in Wonderland as well as your own journey in search for identity.
On June 25th, we invite everyone to tumble down the rabbit hole – the appropriately decorated Propeller gallery door – to discover challenging and exciting works of art and have a cup of tea served in mismatched cups under the clocks stopped at tea-time.
