Whether as a response to landscape or in terms of using abstract means to convey the ebb and flow of organic processes and our place in the world in relation to them, Michael Black’s work intends to convey something of our complex relationship to nature, as it exists today. Abstract paintings embody this concept in Black’s inaugural exhibition at Propeller.
“The pieces in this show represent two different directions in my work. The first is an ongoing engagement with the organic imagery that surrounds us in the natural world, and of which we ourselves are a part. The second is an attempt to engage the viewer in a consideration of culture and history over time, using symbolic ‘fragments’ of imagery that are intended to link past and present. In both cases, I have tried to use the power of abstraction to allow room for individual interpretation and meaning.” – Michael Black
