Intangible Experiences is an exhibition of abstract art mounted in honour of the late painter Gwen Tooth, whose canvases anchor the show. Community response to our call for submissions describing an emotional or intellectual experience through form, texture, colour, gesture and line was overwhelming.
We received 177 submissions from 128 artists who expressed themselves in a variety of mediums. The sheer volume of compelling art necessitated the division of the show into two parts: in-gallery and online only. Both of these components are presented below.
Gwen Tooth (1945 – 2025)
Gwen was an active member of Propeller from 2013 – 2025. Her exuberant abstract works resulted in many series of paintings that embodied her interest in the abstraction of still-life subjects, landscapes, and the forces of nature. She used colour and expressive brushstrokes to transform the gallery space into a vibrant and compelling environment.
Gwen’s works also charted her personal journey, and she described her paintings as being “as much outer landscapes as the inner scapes of my mind and soul.”
