Breaking Ground is a new series of small and medium size paintings that were produced following a long period of creative block. I wanted to go in a new creative direction. Forcing myself out of old ways of working with paint and mixed media I put aside my scraping and burning of surfaces and began to paint in a different more intuitive way.  Using oil paint I began to work without preconceived ideas, trusting in the process using colour, gestural marks and abstracted, sometimes organic forms. I began exploring and expressing the inner landscape that emerged, reworking the material and imagery, scraping away, overpainting and revising until I felt that the work was complete.

Bio
Susan paints abstract work that is inspired by her own emotions and experiences but opts not to work with preconceived ideas choosing to encourage individuals to have their own meeting with the artwork and their own experiential interpretation. This is a spontaneous process which highlights the potential of the unpredictable.

Susan Freypons is a practicing artist who lives and works in Toronto.  She is primarily a painter but also has a ceramic practice.  Her work can be found in collections throughout Canada and Europe. Susan also worked for many years as an educator for the TDSB where she integrated visual art into the curriculum. She also ran her own studio school in Toronto.
