October 2 – 20
Opening Reception: Sunday, Oct. 6, 1 – 4 pm
This exhibition has been a long time in its evolution. I have loved dance since I was a child. In my early twenties, I had the opportunity to attend the Laban School (now Trinity Laban Conservatoire) in London, England, as a dance in education and dance performance student. This fuelled my passion for the discipline, particularly in choreography and scenography.
Many years have elapsed since my Laban training. When taking courses to learn skills to become a Visual Artist in 2000, I attended summer Visual Arts courses at Central St. Martin’s School in London, England, and took a course entitled “Draw the Dancer”.
This was my introduction to drawing a moving figure. I was at an advantage, having learned the steps of the combinations, before the transition to drawing and painting them. In my role as a Visual Artist for the dance, I have sketched the dancers at the National Ballet School, Canada, The Toronto Dance Theatre, Canada, The National Ballet of Canada, The Belly Dancers of Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Canada, The Burklyn Ballet, USA, The Coisceim Dancers of Ireland, The Modern Dance Company of Ireland, dancers of Peter Quanz at the Banff Centre, Canada, The National Ballet of Argentina at the Teatro Colon, and Les Grandes Ballet, Canada, with Choreographer Peter Quanz.
About the Dance exhibition is a compilation of sketches and paintings of dance, some from the early years and some from the National Ballet of Argentina and Les Grandes Ballet in Montreal, Canada. The hand-painted bridal gowns from the Bride’s Project in Toronto, Canada, are meant to be costumes for a dance performance. They are bridal as well. Thank you for sharing my experiences as a Visual Artist for the Dance!
