Between Duality: a performance & artist talk with Cecilia & Mateus Stelini, who are the international guest artists part of the Human Rights project Syzygy. They will perform at the gallery and then open up to a conversation about Human Rights in art. The title of the performance is “Silent Violence”.
Cecilia Stelini and Mateus Stelini present Between Duality, a mother-and-son exhibition exploring the connections that exist between seemingly opposite forces. Through different artistic approaches and generations, their work creates a dialogue around identity, symbolism, and the relationships between the sacred and profane, feminine and masculine, human and nature.
Additionally, Professor Cristina Santos from Brock University will give a brief introduction to her human Rights and arts research.
The Syzygy Project was founded to defend human rights, a fundamental pillar of our social education policies, especially in light of the violations experienced in recent years. Through partnerships with national and international galleries and museums, the project addresses museum diplomacy. It also maintains a strong commitment to Northern Ontario, presenting initiatives that seek to integrate marginalized communities and foster a deeper understanding of contemporary society, going beyond mere tolerance of minorities.
Cecilia Stelini, a visual artist and performer, lives and works in the city of Campinas, Brazil, where she owns an art space, AT | AL | 609- place of artistic investigations. Plastic artist graduated from FAAP / SP and graduated in the Specialization Course in Visual Arts, UNICAMP, SP. She participated in several festivals and performance projects in Brazil and other countries, including Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Canada, Finland, Northern Ireland, the United States, and Poland.
Her research focuses on sexuality and gender studies from an intersectional feminist perspective, examining the construction of monstrous women through an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach, as seen in literature, film, television, popular culture, and mythology. She also investigates the construct of political and social deviance and trauma in life narratives as a means of constructing a personal and communal sense of identity that challenges official history and patriarchy.
The exchange and sharing with the public are the factors that interest me most in presenting a work, whether it is a performance, intervention, or installation. The selection of the heart and fish elements as the main ones was due to the production and investigation of various materials with which I worked, because their symbolism allowed me to move between different polarities, highlighting the Sacred and the Profane, and the Feminine and the Masculine.
Mateus Stelini’s works dwell between the realms of the Humane, the Religious and the Animal. He creates new perspectives to old problems, especially in the spheres of gender, work and the relationship between human beings and nature, considering that the dualities should function in a two-way relationship. The dichotomy Reason x Experience serves as an important standpoint for appreciating his works.
Mateus Stelini graduated in Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo in 2010. Began working as a visual artist in 2012. Initially produced sound objects and installations, blending music with carved wood and other materials. In 2015, began studying and photographing performance, also developing works with video. More recently, he has included ceramics in his production. Drawing and painting have always been part of it.
He has exhibited his work in galleries, museums, universities, and public spaces in Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the USA, India, Poland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland.
