Propeller Art Gallery recognizes that artistic practices evolve alongside technological tools. However, our mandate requires that the human artist remains the primary author, visionary, and technical director of their work. AI tools may assist, but not substitute for, an artist’s traditional creative voice and craftsmanship.
Permitted & Prohibited Works:
- Permitted (AI-Assisted Art):
- Works where AI is integrated as one component of a broader, multi-step creative workflow.
- Pieces involving significant human intervention, manipulation, digital/physical post-processing, collage, hybrid media.
- Artworks where the visual outcome reflects the artist’s direct physical, digital, or conceptual craftsmanship beyond machine generation alone.
- Prohibited (Prompt-Only Generation):
- Raw, unaltered text-to-image/video generations produced solely by entering prompts into a commercial, open-source, or private AI model.
- Works where the computational model constitutes the sole technical and compositional author.
Mandatory Disclosure Requirements:
Artists submitting AI-assisted artwork must complete an AI Process Disclosure as part of their submission and exhibition label documentation:
Every submission utilizing AI must include:
- Tools Used: Specific AI models, software, or plugins utilized (e.g., Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Runway, Photoshop Generative Fill).
- Role of AI in Workflow: A brief explanation (1–3 sentences) describing where AI was applied (e.g., concept ideation, texture synthesis, background rendering, color grading).
- Human Authorship Statement: A concise summary of the primary technical and manual processes executed by the artist to transform, assemble, and finalize the piece.
Labeling and Documentation:
For catalogue entries, gallery wall labels, and web documentation, artworks that incorporate AI tools could follow these attribution examples:
- Wall Label: Archival pigment print with digital painting and AI-assisted composite elements
- Process Statement (For didactic panels, submission forms, and artist statements):
- “Initial composition generated using [Model/Tool Name] based on original reference sketches, followed by extensive hand-painted digital manipulation, color separation, and manual screenprinting on archival paper.”
Artist Responsibility & Intellectual Property:
Artists submitting AI-assisted works are solely responsible for ensuring their process adheres to ethical practices regarding training datasets and copyright laws. Submissions must not infringe upon the intellectual property, likeness, or distinctive style of living artists. Propeller Art Gallery reserves the right to request documentation of an artist’s process if questions regarding authorship arise during the jurying or exhibition process.
